Papa is a retired mining and geodetic engineer. He used to be a director for operations for a mining and logging company operating in the Sierra Madre Region and Aurora Province. That's why he only comes home once every quarter. One of his stories- During the 80'she was once captured by the NPA group because they were seen "surveilling" the NPA territory with all the gadgets like compass, binoculars and other gadgets as if they were military men. They were captured by the group of Father Balweg, (if that name rings a bell to you) but after 48 hours and confirming that they were just part of a logging and mining firm, they were freed. Papa didn't tell us about it especially to Mama who might suffer a heart attack. He only revealed it to us when he retired about 12 years ago when he saw a nikon binoculars magazine that my sister brought home when she was in Japan. We didn't know that he had kept a picture of him and Father Balweg in his wallet and up until this time, he can't forget that experience. I guess that what made him to be sympathetic to the NPA's advocacy. Stockholm syndrome? I don't know. All I know is that I share some of the NPA's idealism but definitely communism.
